AKI, Swiss Re host inaugural Insurance Debates
The first ever insurance debate tournament for university students was held on 26th and 27th January 2018 at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
The event brought together over 200 university students to constructively engage on insurance matters.
A total of 64 teams from 22 universities battled it out through four preliminary rounds before breaking off to the quarters, semi-finals and finals. The motions debated touched on health insurance, agriculture insurance, life insurance, funeral insurance and the need for insurance to be taught in all schools.
The debates provided the students a platform to grow their knowledge on insurance as they were trained on the various elements and principles of insurance by industry practitioners.
The winners of the debates tournament were Ndindi Muigai and Greggory Otieno from Strathmore University. The best female speaker was Sharon Ouna from Strathmore University while Peter Kilonzo from Kaimosi University clinched the best male speaker.
The event was held in partnership with Swiss Re and the Kenya National Debates Council (KNDC).The debates tournament forms part of the initiatives that aim to reduce the protection gap by educating university students who are the next insurance customers.
